US 82, US 425, SR 8 and SR 189 are the major roads available to motorists in Hamburg.

Hamburg was first plotted in the Fall of 1849. Agriculture was the primary driver to the economy into the early 1900's. However lumber began to take over especially after the Great Depression when many small farmers were forced to give up their farms. Now cotton, soybeans and timber play a dominant role in the city's economy either through employment or trade. Among the houses in town which are on the National Register of Historic Places is the Watson House, circa 1918, which is now the Ashley County museum. The home, built in Neo-Classical Revival style, now displays exhibits of an historical nature. They include pieces of period furniture; musical instruments such as a Parlor Grand Piano, pump organs, melodeons and music boxes; Indian artifacts of prehistory in Ashley county; the Erskine Harriman collection of horse-drawn vehicles with tack and harnesses; quilts and other Ashley county handmade items and period clothing, including hats, shoes, dresses and accessories as well as a collection of records, books, pictures and newspapers.
