In 1893 this was a railroad and steel town with residents of 70 different nationalities. The JET (Jobs Education & Training) Program has helped hundred of residents. North Harbor Initiative is improving city parks, providing new housing and businesses and a performing arts center. Ameristar Hotel and Casino is at the shores edge of Lake Michigan. There is a marina and renovated beach by the Lake.
