| About the area |
Newport lies on a cove to the Sebasticook lake where there is a Public Boat Landing and Swim front. This is a small town with a small town flavor; under 2,000 people living in an area of approximately 3 ½ square miles. People started settling in Newport at the beginning of the 19th century and the town was incorporated about 10 years later. At the beginning the economy here was dependent on a couple of lumber mills, a carriage maker, meal and flour mill, marble, granite and slate works, iron works, and a boots and shoes manufacturer. However most of the people in the area were engaged in farming. |
