About the area |
English settlers came to this town as early as the 1650’s. In the late nineteenth century much of the town’s income was dependent on the businesses and homes of the wealthy summer residents. Today York provides several parks for the enjoyment of its residents. Among these are two ballfields at Smith field and York beach. There are also Goodrich, Moulton and Hartley Mason parks which have picnic areas and fields for open play. There are facilities for diving at Sohier park and for fishing here and at Town Docks 1 and 2 as well. The Mt. Agamenticus site has trails for hiking and biking. The city is celebrated at its annual York Days festival at the end of July with music at Ellis Park and a Softball tournament as well as other events at other locations in town.
