About the area |
The site of the 1876 Fort Keogh containment to secure the area in the aftermath of the Custer Battle is now the location of the Range Riders museum. The museum complex consists of nine buildings in which there are thousands of artifacts representative of the pioneer life led by the men and women in this area. Each of the buildings has its own character. The log building has displays of pictures of early day settlers, the famed Coggshall saddle, ladies' side saddles, antiquated cameras, patchwork quilts, and household utensils. The Pioneer Memorial Hall commemorates the region's pioneers with its display of over 700 plaques. The Bert Clark Gun Collection has in it over 400 firearms. Then there are the Fort Keogh Officers' Quarters, Coach House, Homestead House and One-Room School. There is a particularly interesting exhibit in the Heritage Center and Coach House; a frontier town with eleven different shops representing a rendition of Old Main Street in Milestown. The Miles City Bluegrass festival in late September always attracts large numbers of residents and folks from around the area with its three days of music. In May rodeo lovers and promoters descend on Miles city for the World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse sale. There are several events at this this festival including the Thursday concert, Match Bronco ride, Bucking Horse and Bucking Bull sale, Wild horse race, Horse race and the Main Street parade.
