About the area |
After a West Point graduate and topographical engineer, stationed at nearby Fort Totten, resigned from the army he settled down on land bordering the North shore of Devils Lake around 1882. He surveyed a town site and called it Creelsburg which was later changed to when a post office was established. Soon after the the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway bought a large part of the town and named it Devils Lake, which went through an iteration as City of Devils Lake before getting its final name. The town has the benefit of the lake at its doorstep where can residents can swim, fish and boat. Local and visiting hunters are in their glory in the Fall when hundreds of thousands of waterfowl migrate to the area. The birds seen here include canadian, snow and blue geese; mallard, pintail and teal ducks and sandhill crane. The hunters don't overlook the white-tail deer that come around. The North Dakota Maritime museum is located on the second floor of the World War Memorial building. The museum is the repository for World War posters, military clothing including a large collection of caps, weapons, military flags, artillery shells and ammunition. The Old Post Office museum has exhibits of a pioneer doctor's room, the original federal courtroom, an early law office, a barber shop, a dentist office, a 1903 Orient automobile and displays of Native American beadwork
