About the area |
Schaghticoke means “the place where waters mingle”, and several Native American tribes populated the land prior to European settlements including. Taking their name from the area they settled, the Schaghticoke Natives were primarily Mohican refugees from Connecticut along the Housatonic River. A Welfare tree was planted at the junction of the Hoosic River and Tomhannock Creek in 1675 to symbolize the friendship between the English and Dutch and the Schaghticoke tribe. Several hamlets and villages make up the Town of Schaghticoke: Grant Hollow, Hemstreet Park, Melrose, Pleasantdale (formerly part of Lansingburgh), Reynolds, Schaghticoke Hill, Spiegletown (formerly part of Lansingburgh), Valley Falls, E Schaghticoke, and Schaghticoke.
