Gen. Ransom Rathbone started the first real business enterprise in town, and triggered later development; Cameron Mills was named for David Hubbard's complex of mills. Formed in 1673, the Town of Rathbone includes the hamlets of Cameron Mills, (located near rte 417), Derby Switch & Rathbone. County Rte 119 follows the Canisteo River through town.
