This town was founded around 1814 and if the rolling pastures and southern hospitality here don't get you the historic sites will. The town was actually created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly selecting a tract of land belonging to one of the women settlers to be laid out in lots and selecting the name. By 20 years later the town had two stage routes serving it. However, not until around 1890 when the railroad came did the economy of the town grow so much so that the one and two story wood frame business buildings were replaced by two and three story brick masonry buildings. The Atlantic and Danville shops also came to Lawrenceville at this time providing a business base and drawing more people who were accommodated by new residential areas.
