| About the area |
As its name indicates the city lies along Silver Lake. It was incorporated around 1871 and in 1911 the first high school class was organized although a two room schoolhouse had existed before that. The town has a community center and a city park shelter house. The fire department started as a volunteer unit but with the organization of Shawnee County Rural Fire District #1 it now has 2 full time employees.
